Technically, nobody will see this until Sunday (unless they're in Hawaii, but then why would they need a Colorado Staycation guide?) I'm posting very late this evening, but I'm quite confident nobody will mind.
Every year on Labor Day weekend we enjoy a festival called Taste of Colorado. It would be more appropriate to call it "Buffet of Colorado" but let's not get picky with semantics. Basically, we turn Capitol Hill into a glutton fest with vendors from all over the state converging to hawk food, drink, art, clothing, and trinkets. Any of the non-edible items can be purchased with cash, but you cannot purchase the food items directly. Instead you have to buy tickets and exchange the tickets for food or drink. It has something to do with the ticket sales benefiting a non-profit or something or other.
Once you have your tickets, you walk around Civic Center Park and spend said tickets on food from dozens of vendors. You can get entree sized portions or "tastes." You continue walking around, listening to music, and tasting food until you run out of tickets. Never fear! There is another ticket booth right around the corner! So, you buy more tickets and continue your walk, stuffing your face with fried alligator tail, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and funnel cakes. Then you wash it down with a 10-ticket beer (tickets are $5 for 8.) All this happens to the beat of live music, which sort of makes up for the cost. And the festival is always advertised as "Free admission!" Of course you can get in for free, but being stuck in that crowd of munchers will be pretty miserable if you don't bring cash to join in on the munching!
In all seriousness, Taste of Colorado is a pretty good time. There are plenty of free things to participate in for the kids including live performances. I'm not a fan of the crowds, but I deal with them on this weekend every year just so I can eat some alligator tail. Also, Boyz II Men and Blood, Sweat and Tears are performing on the main stage this year. Who can say no to that?
